Mike Downey, Director Sports Technology Engineering, Microsoft

I work in Microsoft's DX (technical evangelism) group with professional sports leagues, teams, and media companies to build scalable, cloud-based, consumer engagement and monetization platforms, as well as deeply engaging consumer applications for XBOX, Windows Phone, Windows, and third-party client platforms. My role focuses on identifying technical opportunities and requirements with the partner, architecting solutions, structuring deals, resource planning and budgeting, vendor management, and seeing development of the project through from concept to completion. Much of my work revolves around data analytics, business intelligence, IoT and sensors, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. I also look for opportunities to white label the technologies that we build so we can scale our investments to more partners and accrue more value to Microsoft. Much of my time is spent working directly with business and IT executives from each of the partners to learn more about their business and identify which areas that a technology partnership could make the biggest impact. My ultimate goal is to help the partner realize tremendous value from their relationship with Microsoft while telling a uniquely Microsoft story that allows us to differentiate from our competitors by leveraging our unique collection of technology assets. I currently manage our technical relationship with partners including NFL, PGA TOUR, NASCAR, ESPN, MLB, NBA, NHL, NCAA, MLS, Formula One, Real Madrid, as well as Europe's top football (soccer) clubs.
